We were launched on 01st April 2008 as part of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA). We took over responsibility from the Police National Missing Persons Bureau which was housed within the Metropolitan Police Service. The change was made to improve the service offered to policing in respect of the handling of missing person and unidentified investigations.

In April 2012 we became part of the Serious and Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) ahead of our transition in to the National Crime Agency (NCA) in October 2013.
